James E. Reed, 90, of Danville, Boone County, died Feb. 26, 2008, in Boone Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Reed was born Dec. 25, 1917, in Eskdale, Kanawha County, and was a son of the late Charles and Susie Spears Reed.
Mr. Reed was a graduate of Van High School. He graduated from Concord College in 1952 with a B.S. degree in education. He taught and was a principal in the Boone County school system for over 30 years. He was a lifelong hunter, fisherman and trapper. He was a past president of the Pond Fork Hunting and Fishing Club. The Westmoreland Hunting Preserve, which is now known as the Wild Boar Hunting Area, near Cazy, Boone County, was established under his leadership. He was a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Madison-Danville Public Service District. He established a new wastewater facility in the Danville area. He provided leadership in obtaining public water for the residents of Lick Creek, near Danville. He was a volunteer narrator for the Collins B. Huntington Railroad Historical Society. He narrated train trips along the New and Greenbrier river valleys in southeastern West Virginia from Charleston to Clifton Forge, Va. He actively participated on these trips into his early 80s. He was recently interviewed by "Goldenseal" magazine for a story concerning his historical narration on the Amtrak trains. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Army Air Corps, and was a life member of the American Legion and the WVEA. Recently he was presented with the Order of the 35th Star by Gov. Joe Manchin.
Mr. Reed is survived by his wife, Margaret M. Reed of Danville; one son, James E. Reed Jr. and wife, Pat, of Beckley; grandchildren, Cindy Reed of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Lisa Reed Jeffrey and husband, Keith, of Beckley; and great-grandchildren, Madison and Skylar of Beckley.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Stevens Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Barker officiating. Burial will follow in Boone Memorial Park, Madison, with military graveside rites by Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578.
There will be a gathering of family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
