Robert J PUGH

Indian Mound Cemetery
Hampshire County,
West Virginia

Robert J.(James) Pugh was the son of James B. Pugh (buried in Capon Chapel Cemetery) and Eveline S. (Howard) Pugh, buried in Indian Mound Cemetery. He served in the Civil War in Company I, 13th Virginia Infantry Regiment, 1861-1865, a unit known as the "Frontier Riflemen." Robert J. Pugh was wounded in the leg at Hanover Courthouse, part of The Battle of Bethesda Church. After the war, Robert J. Pugh was a respected businessman in Romney, WV, according to a book by Maude Pugh (p. 161, Capon Valley: It's Pioneers and Their Descendants.) He married Susan Elizabeth Allen in 1876. The inscription on the headstone says "Died April 5, 1886 in the 44th year of his age." This picture was taken in May, 2012. I regret that I did not transcribe the last line on the tombstone.
